Boys Life 4 : FOUR PLAY - 40 min / US / 2003
This popular series of compiled short films about modern gay life gets its fourth installment with BOYS LIFE 4: FOUR
PLAy. From this collection we screen 2 short films of a combined
duration of around 40 min.
(a) Brian Sloan's BUMPING HEADS - a bittersweet tale about an older man who gets involved with a troubled twentysomething.
(b) Eric Mueller's THIS CAR UP - an imaginatively filmed exploration of the budding attraction between two opposites in an office building
elevator
&
Many People Many Desires - documentary by V.Jaishri
for Sangama / 40 min
The film is really comprehensive - we get a full picture of the queer
community (mostly, though not all Bangalore based) from lesbians, gays,
transgendered people, hijras, kotis. The communities shown also cut across
all classes and language groups.
A very pleasant surprise is how many of the people shown let themselves be
filmed openly . . . .

1st Tea Break - 15 min ~~~
Strawberry & Chocolate - 105 min / Cuba-
Spanish / 1993
This acclaimed, Oscar-nominated film set in Cuba follows the unlikely friendship between David (Vladimir Cruz), a naive young college kid, and Diego (Jorge Perrugoria), a flamboyantly gay writer. At first David balks at Diego's anti-Castro leanings (which have grown especially strong in the light of the government's suppression of homosexuality), but finds irresistible Diego's access to American contraband (magazines, alcohol, etc.). As the friendship develops, however, he emerges from his uptight conservative background to acquire a broader, more liberating view of life.
Combining drama with a bit of humor, this film provides a light, but realistic look at the Cuban Revolution, government persecution of marginalized groups, and the tendency of human kindness to overcome
hardship.
Though
guys coming slightly late can be condoned, the bane of the festivals is
the constant traffic of guys running in and out to answer cell
phones, quite unconcerned with the disturbance
they are causing.
