FILMS to be SCREENED :
LAW OF DESIRE - 1986 / 1 hr 45 min / directed by Pedro Almodóvar /
Spanish
with EST
This bold tale of passion's dire consequences is one of Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar's most smoldering films.
Antonio Banderas stars as Antonio Benítez, an obsessive fan of writer-director Pablo Quintero (Eusebio Poncela), a cocaine-snorting homosexual hedonist whose last boyfriend, Juan (Miguel Molina), has just moved out. Antonio and Pablo have a few passionate nights, but Antonio's obsessive love soon proves hard for the noncommittal Pablo to escape from. Meanwhile, Pablo's transsexual sister, Tina (Carmen Maura), has problems of her own, including a closet brimming with dark sexual skeletons and Ada (Manuela Velasco), her unofficially adopted daughter. Pablo writes a play for Tina to star in, but when Antonio stalks and murders Juan in a fit of jealousy, the police end up suspecting the character Tina performs in the play. Pablo winds up with amnesia after a car accident, and the troubles just get weirder from there. For American audiences unfamiliar with Almodóvar's style, this film may prove a shocking experience, but his fans know that beneath their transgressive exteriors, his films throb with a palpable love of humanity, life, beauty, and art. This is a fine example of that art, with great music and memorable performances all around.

The voices of the new generation - At the last International Film Festival IFFI
- Goa 2004, an interesting program was curated by Dev Benegal and Anuradha Parikh called
"24x7 making
movies".
Here people under the age of 24 were invited to come and make movies. They
were given the hardware - a professional miniDV camera and a
state-of-the-art editing system. The catch was, the films had to be made
in 24 hours flat - the shoot, the picture & sound edit and the titles all in
one day. The theme was "Nature and Violence".

Of the 40 short fiction films made, 4 had queer

YOSSI AND JAGGER - 2003 / 1 hr 11 min / directed by Eytan Fox / Israeli with
EST
Based on a true story, Yossi & Jagger portrays the love affair of two Israeli officers in an IDF position on the Israeli-Lebanese border. They are commanders, they are in love, and they try to find a place of their own in an oppressing and rigid system, which sends them to defend a cause they do not necessarily believe
in
Yossi, the company commander, is an introvert guy and largely a man-of-the-system.
Jagger, the platoon commander, is an open and much more liberated guy. He is the star of the company. Yossi is determined to keep their love in secret. Whereas,
Jagger, who is about to finish the service, believes that Yossi should leave the army with him. Shortly before departing for a dangerous ambush, the tension between the lovers gets high almost
explosive.
Yossi & Jagger portrays in a courageous, genuine, amusing and
sometimes painful fashion the complicated and sensitive topic of "gays in the military". It also portrays the tragic structure of life of young Israelis today. The film presents an enchanting ensemble of young men and women that were supposed, in this time of their lives, to dance, study and love. Instead, due to the mandatory army service and the complicated situation in the region, they have to devote their most beautiful years to their country, to be soldiers, to kill and get killed.
