My experiences with GayBombay
-----------------------------
During the month of December 2001, I travelled to India. This was my second trip to the country, after
almost 9 years. The last time I went there, I was much younger, and closetted. This time, it was different. I
was quite keen on meeting up members of the gay community of Mumbai.
My primary contact was with Vikram. Through him, I
heard about the Sunday afternoon meetings. I attended my first one on 16/12/2001. They were watching the
first 8 episodes of Queer as Folk. I was a little anxious about going there, and when I walked into the
room, everyone was quietly watching the telly. There was little opportunity to interact until the lunch
break, when I got talking to a few people. Everyone was very friendly, and I enjoyed being there. I felt
much more relaxed in the second half of the afternoon, and went away with a good feeling in the evening.
My second attendance was on 30/12/2001, when Devadatt gave a talk on Safer Sex. I met some new people there.
The venue was pleasant, and the talk was very interesting. I learnt some new things, and funnily
enough, because Devadutt was so explicit about the anatomy of the anus and rectum, I kept thinking of my
own bowel movements instead of sex for the next few days! ;)
My third event was GayBombay's new year party. I hadno idea of what to expect. I did not expect to see so
many people there (I'm told there were over 300 people there). It was a well-organised event, with a wide
spectrum of people of all ages, and from many different places. I am used to the gay scenes of
Europe, which tend to be quite unfriendly at times. In contrast, this party was very friendly. I spoke to
many different people, some of whom I knew from the previous events, and others who were new to me. Not a
single person was rude or unfriendly. I enjoyed the music too, a mix of Indian and Western sounds. And
besides the food, there was a lot of eye-candy too ;)
This was my first ever experience of gay life in
Mumbai, and particularly the activities of GayBombay (or should I be saying GayMumbai?) All my experiences
were pleasant, and memorable. I would definitely love to come to your city again. I would like to thank
everyone for their wonderful hospitality and warm welcome.
Best wishes for 2002.
