Fruit Salad Sutra
For J in Kuala Lumpur, Eid 2001

After your call I sliced the sides
Off a large ripe mango
Sucking the pit free of the pulp
As in the annals of courtly love

I cut cubes of cool avocado
Juicy orange and mandarin
And split the leather from the
Sensual flesh of the dripping lychee

A mangosteen delivered up
From under it's dark amethyst cowl
The mysterious sweet pillows
Of it's gentle white heart

A cloud of chilli and salt
A dusting of Persian asafoetida
And slowly drizzled lime juice
First one half, then the other

The fruit and pungent counterpoint
Mixed by hand, covered in juice
I licked the medley of hot liquids
From my sweet wet skin
Salving my tongue with the mango of yours
Sipping the citrus of your bright mind
Savouring the avocado of your cool heart
Sucking the lychee of your burning sex
